Back to back Clinton speeches

Last night was Hillary and her “No Way. No How. No McCain.” speech. Now it’s Bill’s turn.

His introduction was mediocre, but his reception is amazing. The more he wanted to move on, the more the audience clapped. That lasted about three solid minutes. When he tried to start his speech, he yelled that it was an honor to be there, but the reception was too loud. He then took another minute or so to get the audience to settle.

Right off the bat, he states his support for Obama. If you heard some of the pundits early in the day on CNN, they thought Bill would be too proud to support Obama. The man may have an ego, but he still knows politics.

And part of knowing the politics is smoothly moving from saying he’s a warm up act for Biden to the hellofa campaign Hillary ran.

He then got another standing ovation for repeating that he supports Obama and that he wants Hill supporters to back Barack too.

Let’s face it Bill still has it. He can keep an audience riveted saying things we’ve already heard from others in a four-day convention. And darn it, he looks good doing it.

Recaps of his speech will be available in all of the usual places – LA Times, NY Times, CNN, WaPo, HuffPo. Take your pick, but also try to catch it on YouTube. Seeing is believing.

Highlights include Bill picking apart the GOP and saying “My fellow Americans, we can do better than that,” and following it up with “Barack Obama will do better than that.” He also ripped at McCain by poking holes in the GOP party platform and linking McCain to the platform and going with the same old policies that crippled our country in the last eight years.

Aside from his speech, which was not as amazing as Hillary’s, I love when the crowd is panned. You get to see what the director thinks are people that represent whatever issue the speaker is talking about. Take note at who’s drinking Bud Light, who’s reading a newspaper, and who’s scratching their nose semi-indiscreetly. Three things I saw within minutes of each other.

Guess who’s back… back again.

Ok, so it’s been a year. And in that year, boy howdy, things sure have changed. But I’m back. Maybe not daily, but I am back. Let’s start off slowly by talking politics. Is there such a thing as starting off slowly with politics? Since I’ve last blogged, a black man and a woman were the two frontrunners for the Democratic Presidential nominees. Now, Barack Obama is the nominee apparent. Wow. For once, I won’t be voting for a white man.

Moving right along.

As we speak, the DNC is having its election year convention in Denver. The queer eye view can be found here 365gay.com. The DNC is also letting you watch it live. In just a few minutes, Michelle Obama is going to be speaking. I’m all aquiver with excitement.  There was so much news/gossip/rumors/controversy around her, every word will be dissected and we’ll review after the dust has settled.

Is feminism dead?
The Bratz dolls and doll-inspired movie has me and other female bloggers wondering whether or not the feminist movement is officially dead. Just take a look at the clip from the Today Show about the movie and what it’s teaching young girls: there is empowerment in fashion.

Calling all butches and butch lovers…
AfterEllen put together a list of the best butches in the media. Nice idea, except that they mixed real women with characters on TV or in the movies. Hmmm, I think you can do better. Who do you think should be on the list? Or, am I being picky about the list?

television.jpg

What do you think about a lesbian president?
No, Hillary hasn’t come out and I make no assumptions about her sexuality. Instead, let’s think entertainment. Cherry Jones is slated to play the president on the show, 24. I’ve never watched the show before… I will now.

Paying for your exes…
A man is still expected to pay alimony to his ex-wife despite the fact that she’s in a relationship with another woman. The women are in a registered domestic partnership, but alas, that doesn’t matter since the judge said that the partnership is cohabitation and not marriage.

The presidential debates…
Debates can be boring at times but last night was different. YouTube was on board for this one giving people the chance to make a video of their question for the candidates. Two of them were related to same-sex marriage.

Lindsay Lohan’s woes…
The last time I posted about Lohan, it was because of her rumored affair with a cute butch DJ. Well, if the rumors are true then maybe we should pay attention to our –at the very least bisexual?- sister is doing. Well, it’s not good news and it does have to do with DUI and getting arrested. Any guesses as to what it might be?

Rosie’s back in the news…
This time, though, it’s her grooming habits that take center stage. Personally, I use tweezers for facial hair or what have you, but not our Rosie! She likes the comfort of a tack to pick at an ingrown hair. And, she loves sharing that with the world. What more can we ask of our lesbian icon than to have her share grooming techniques with us?

Lindsay Lohan writes love letters…
The story gets deeper and deeper between Lindsay and Los Angeles DJ, Samantha Ronson. Now to muddy the water are MySpace love letters. Lohan sent sweet and short quips of her love to Sam, going as far as saying she’d like to have Sam’s kids. I have to admit, they’d make a damn cute couple.

Lesbians in gangs…
The wonderful journalist that is Bill O’Reilly made us aware of the epidemic of lesbian gangs. How nice of him. The problem, however, is that the “crime expert” he had, Rod Wheeler, is full of shit. AND he apologized for it because GLAAD made him. Life can be wonderful.

Lesbian suing homeless shelter settles lawsuit…
Getting ditched from a relationship in a city she wasn’t familiar with wasn’t bad enough, the local homeless shelter didn’t want a lezzie in their building. Well, the ACLU stepped in and had them change their minds about discriminatory practices.

Coming out via the police…
If you’re a republican working on a GOP presidential candidates campaign, it would seem practical that you don’t want to get busted by cops. And if you’re anti-gay, maybe getting caught soliciting sex from a cop with the sex the same as yours might be kinda awkward for the campaign and in explaining why you’re anti-gay. Well, the GOP never ceases to amaze us with their moral high ground for everyone except them. Cheers to Bob Allen for getting caught with his pants down.

Three cheers for Larry Flynt!
Speaking of cheering someone on, Larry Flynt deserves some kudos for investigating the moral high ground of our politicians and then catching them on their shit. Flynt helped out the “sins” of republican senator David Vitter.

Keeping an eye on Madonna…
Last we left you, she was pumping iron to get herself into concert shape. There she was entertaining for a message about mother earth. But backstage, the message was different – don’t look away if you’re interviewing Madonna. What, like I’d make this up?

Can lesbian life be a comedy?
Well, if I opened up about mine, it would be a dramedy, cuz what lesbian life is complete without drama? Logo is hip to the idea of laughing heartily at what it is to be a lesbian with new show Exes and Ohs. And actor and writer of the short film which the show is based on, Michelle Paradise, chronicles the evolution on her blog which I encourage you to peruse.

Speaking of drama…
Drama on the high seas (well low waves) of Southern California is also on a Logo time slot near you. Curl Girls features six very lovely, very drama-filled surfers catching waves and occasionally making them too. I’m hooked, are you?

More chick viewing…
Girltrash has finally made it to the web and you can catch up to all of the trashy goodness on OurChart. These four-minute installations have me begging for more. And I don’t say that just because I was on set one day.

It’s what brown can’t do for us…
Sadly, UPS said no to same-sex benefits for New Jersey couples. Well, at least their uniforms still score them points.

Free speech-loving Phelps clan caught in child abuse case…
Ok, one more story that I just couldn’t make up even if I tried. That’s what you get when you send your 10-year-old to do your dirty work.

Anti-gay protesters in San Diego only get a yawn at a Padres game…
Gotta love baseball and baseball fans. Well, maybe not all of them, but certainly Padres fans. They collectively ignored the hell out of anti-gay protesters. Maybe they’ll take a hint?

Daily Digest for Thursday, June 28.

Know what today is?
It’s the anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Take a moment to see how far we’ve come and then how much more we need to go. Oh, and also check this out.

Speaking of gays…
OUT Magazine is looking for the 100 gay and gay-friendly men and women who inspired, intrigued, entertained, taught us or captured our imagination…. Gay and Gay-friendly…. Because what, we couldn’t find 100 out gays? Really? Across the country and we couldn’t find 100 out gays? Anyway, you can suggest someone for the list.

Hillary Clinton announces national LGBT steering committee
How better to win over the gays than by having a steering committee just for us! Yay! Maybe she was trying to get onto the Out 100 list.

Madonna’s body…
She’s almost 50 and you know what that means, media gossips everywhere start looking at what age will do to her. And of course, she’s aware of that microscope on her, but in a way that makes her work out harder so she looks super good for her concerts. Maybe Beth Ditto from The Gossip could do an intervention.

The saga continues…
Now Isaiah Washington is using the race card as part of this whole situation. No matter what actually happened, Washington’s interviews aren’t helping him, even if he’s 100% right.

And now for some politics…
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is getting up and into presidential candidates business when it comes to the gays. Here’s how they score it.

Kyra Sedgwick is cute, a great actor and totally queer-friendly…
Sedgwick might have a little lesbian in her…. for her show, TNT’s The Closer, at least. And who would she like to get it on with if there was a lezzie storyline? Jodie Foster or Salma Hayek.

rosie_odonnell1.jpg

Rosie O’Donnell news…
What kind of lesbian would I be if I didn’t get you caught up on what Rosie’s up to lately? O’Donnell was offered, but is not taking The Price is Right job because she doesn’t want to relocate. Oh what it must be like to turn down millions because you want to stay in New York.

Also, in O’Donnell news..
Rosie likes Britney and would love her to be at the Los Angeles True Colors concert
. Love Rosie, but there’s no accounting for taste.

You also can’t go a week without an episode of…
As Isaiah Washington goes down… Seriously there are more twists and turns in this saga that it makes dyke drama look tame. Washington recently talked to activist Keith Boykin and the conversation is posted on his website.

And in another aspect of this story…
Activist Jasmyne Cannick has added some dimension to the Washington/GLAAD PSA by giving some background on how the PSA came to be and whether or not GLAAD might have been playing race politics with the message of the PSA. She also has posted the PSA by Washington if you haven’t seen it already.

Let’s move away from celebrity dyke drama and on to reality…
In New Jersey, school officials found it appropriate to censor a picture of an openly gay senior and his boyfriend who were kissing and now have apologized for it. They’ve also gone the step further and said they’d print up new yearbooks for those who’d want them. Call that a kiss and make up.

Did you know gays are worthless?
Some foolio from the Family Research Council has made the asinine argument that since gays can’t reproduce to the same degree “authentic” marriages can, then we’re worthless. I have a better, more believable and truthful argument about the FRC: their research is bogus and full of shit, therefore fuck them.

And finally for something nice for your eyes…

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is finally talking about her time on The View with Rosie. What better way to describe it than challenging?

And speaking of The View..
Since when can’t lesbians talk about straight sex??? Barbara Walters, of all people, said that now that Rosie’s gone they can talk straight sex…. cuz apparently Rosie wasn’t capable as she’s completely blind to ALL of society’s heterosexist ways. For once, Babs is so completely off.

For all of you sports fiends…
We’ve recently seen retired players and lacrosse coaches come out, but now it’s the Umps’ turn. A retired ump talks to OutSports.com about coming out and other closeted umps in Major League Baseball. Brings a new meaning to ‘let’s play ball’ doesn’t it?

Reality TV claims another queer…
MTV is a gay magnet. Almost every reality show they have on has its share of our lavender brothers and sisters. Let’s add one more to the mix! Coral Smith and her, um, bodacious breasts are exploring the lesbian qualities of life. Read an interview with her and see her pic (cuz I know mentioning her breasts got you interested) here.

Half jokingly maybe? Women can be so difficult to deal with. I suspect she’d want out after a month.

A gay rag is pulled from a Nashville supermarket because they don’t want to promote “political, religious or other specific agendas.” Um, yeah so are they taking out every op-ed section of the newspapers they do sell???

Did you miss out on Isaiah Washington getting fired from Grey’s? Yes it did happen last week, but he just did an interview with Entertainment Weekly where he was candid about his firing and how much responsibility he has in the whole T.R. Knight gay-bash brewhaha. All things being fair, get his side of the story then form an opinion.
